A lake that spans the Federal District and the State of Mexico in central Mexico. It is 2,237m above sea level. During the Aztec Empire, the lake had a wide surface area, and the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, was located in the western part of the lake. However, after the construction of Mexico City, there was a risk of the city being flooded, so drainage work began in the 17th century, and in 1900, a drainage channel and the Tequixuaq Tunnel were completed, causing the lake to shrink. Currently, most of the lake is salty desert, but the lake expands at the end of the rainy season. [Tajima Hisashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
