Wabi (Wabi) - Wabi

Japanese: わび(侘) - わび

The noun form of the verb wabu. It means to fall into disgrace or to become discouraged or to feel lonely and tenuous as a result of some misfortune. However, in the hermitage life of the Middle Ages, it came to be highly and positively evaluated as a proof of freedom from the values and sense of order that value worldly honor and interests, and it was further deepened and refined as the fundamental spirit of wabizuki (the refinement of wabi) of Takeno Jo'o, Sen no Rikyu, and others. In the later Zensaroku (Zen Saroku) written by Sen Sotan, it is succinctly explained that "Even when you are in a state of inconvenience, you should not feel that you are in a state of inconvenience, even when you are not lacking, you should not feel that you are in a state of illness, and you should understand that wabi is when you do not feel that you are in a state of illness."

動詞〈わぶ〉の名詞形。なんらかの不運にあって零落するとか，失望落胆するとか，あるいはその結果心細くはかなく思っているとかいう意味である。ところが，中世の隠者たちの草庵生活では，それが世俗の名誉や利害を重んじる価値観･秩序観から自由であることを明示するあかしとして高く積極的に評価されるようになり，さらに武野紹鷗（じようおう），千利休らの〈侘数寄（わびずき）〉の茶の根本精神として深化洗練されていった。後の千宗旦著《禅茶録》には〈其不自由なるも，不自由なりとおもふ念を不生（しようぜず），不足（たらざる）も不足の念を起さず，不調（ととのわざる）も不調の念を抱かぬを侘なりと心得べきなり〉と簡潔に示されている。
