Fuyou Wakashu - Collection of poems by Fuyou Wakashu

This is a collection of narrative poems compiled in the Kamakura period. The last two volumes of the 20 volumes are missing. It was compiled in 1271 (Bun'ei 8) at the behest of Omiya-in, who was the Empress of Emperor Gosaga. It is said to have been compiled by Fujiwara no Tameie. It selected narrative waka poems that had been created and passed down at the time, and arranged them in the format of imperially commissioned waka anthologies into four categories: Seasons, Love, and Miscellaneous. The remaining 18 volumes contain approximately 200 stories and 1,418 waka poems. The collection contains 24 surviving stories and 174 well-known lost stories, providing valuable material for research into stories from the Heian to Kamakura periods.

In descending order of the number of poems, "The Tale of Genji" has 180, "The Tale of Utsubo" has 110, and "The Tale of Sagoromo" has 56. The number of poems gives an idea of ​​whether a story is long or short, and whether it is a masterpiece or not. In addition, the characters and scenes in the story can be imagined from the description, the names of the people, and the waka poems, so this material makes it possible to some extent to restore the outline of lost tales, compare similar scenes between stories, and investigate the influence of waka poems.

鎌倉時代に編纂(へんさん)された物語歌集。20巻のうち末尾二巻を欠く。1271年（文永8）後嵯峨(ごさが)天皇の中宮(ちゅうぐう)であった大宮院の命を受けて撰進(せんしん)したもの。撰者は藤原為家(ためいえ)かといわれる。当時つくり伝えられていた物語の和歌を選び、勅撰和歌集の体裁に倣って四季、恋、雑(ぞう)に分類配列する。現存18巻でいえば、物語数にして約200編、和歌1418首を収める。内訳は、現存する物語24編、名の知られる散佚(さんいつ)物語174編で、平安時代から鎌倉時代にかけての物語の研究に貴重な資料を提供する。

　歌数の多い順では『源氏物語』180首、『うつほ物語』110首、『狭衣(さごろも)物語』56首となっており、その多寡により物語が長編か短編か、傑作か否かの見当がつけられる。また、詞書(ことばがき)、詠(よ)み人名(びとめい)、和歌から、登場人物や作中場面が想像されるわけで、散佚物語の粗筋の復原や、物語相互の類似場面の比較、和歌の影響関係の調査をあるところまで可能にする資料である。
