Japanese: 風習喜劇 - ふうしゅうきげき(英語表記)comedy of manners
Comedy of Manners
A comedy that depicts specific social customs through witty dialogue. Set in upper-class society, it is also known as a "drawing-room comedy" or "high comedy." Molière's The Misanthrope belongs to this genre. It became popular in England during the Restoration under French influence, with G. Etheridge and W. Congreve among its creators. The tradition of comedy of manners was continued by R. Sheridan, O. Wilde, S. Maugham, N. Coward, and others, and continues to this day.
