During this period, secular instrumental music and songs were also popular, and in the 18th century, Carlos de Seixas (1704-42), Francisco Antonio de Almeida (?-1755), and João de Sousa Carvalho (1745-98) were active in the capital Lisbon, producing keyboard music, orchestral music, and opera. In the 19th century, the influence of Italian opera was significant, and the national characteristics of the city receded, but from the second half of the century to the 20th century, Alfredo Keil (1850-1907) and José Vianna da Motta (1868-1948) were active as national musicians. …
