It is a general name for the genus Malva , the genus Hibiscus , and related genera in the Malvaceae family, but it can also simply refer to mallow or winter mallow. Mallow M. sylvestris is a biennial plant that was introduced from China long ago and is often planted in farm gardens. It grows to a height of 60-90 cm, and its leaves are alternate and circular with 5-9 shallow incisions and shallow sawtooth edges. In May and June, it produces several flowers about 2 cm in diameter in the leaf axils. Under the flower are three bracts and a green calyx divided into five. It has five pale purple petals with prominent purple streaks. The stamens gather together to form a long hollow cylinder through which the slender pistil style passes. The name mallow is said to come from the meaning of looking up to the sun. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
