A genus of fungi in the order Pyralidae, class Oomycetes, subphylum Flagellates. A pathogenic fungus that parasitizes plants and causes seedling damping-off and cotton rot. It generally rots seedlings and roots, forming cotton-like colonies. The zoosporangium (presporangium) is spherical to lemon-shaped and looks like a single conidium at the end of a stalk. The contents turn into numerous zoospores that break the membrane and swim out ( P. aphanidermatum (Edson) Fitzp.), and some produce conidia ( P. debaryanum Hesse).
