Zengzi (English spelling)

Japanese: 曾子 - そうし(英語表記)Zeng-zi
Zengzi (English spelling)
[Born] 505?
[Dead]?
An educator in the early Warring States period in China. Son of Zeng Dian, his given name was Shen. His courtesy name was Ziyu. He was from Nanwucheng (Shandong Province). He was a senior disciple of Confucius, and was deeply filial, reflective, and dedicated to good conduct. He educated his disciples in Lu, and it is said that Zisi and Mencius followed in his footsteps. He is considered the leading figure in the missionary school, as opposed to the traditional school of Zixia. He formed a school of thought, and his school's writings include the 18-part Zengzi, of which 10 remain in the Great Book of Ceremonies. He considers filial piety and faith to be the basis of moral behavior. He is also said to have written the Book of Filial Piety, but the extant copy was revised by someone around the Qin and Han periods. Zhu Xi of the Song dynasty claims that the Great Learning was written by Zengzi, but there is no evidence.
