The Fouillant Club was founded in July 1791, after the attempted defection of King Louis XVI of France (Flight to Varennes), over the issue of deposing the king. Its headquarters were in a monastery under the Fouillant order (a descendant of the Cistercian order) near the Tuileries Palace in Paris, so it came to be called the Fouillant Club. Its main members were the "Triarchate" of Barnave, Duport, and Ramette, as well as Bailly, La Fayette, and Sieyes, who had joined the "Club of 89." Politically, it aimed to maintain the constitutional monarchy and the 1791 Constitution. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
