...It is played by plucking it with the fingertips of the right hand. Its direct predecessor is the dombra of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, which is a descendant of the tambour, a small stringed instrument with an almost egg-shaped body found throughout Western Asia. The unique triangular body was already seen in stringed instruments in Kazakhstan and the southern part of the former Soviet Union, but because it was a peasant instrument, in the 18th century it was made into a simpler form that could be made by combining flat pieces, giving birth to the modern balalaika.
