Benzoin - Benzoiin (English spelling)

Benzoin - Benzoiin (English spelling)

It is an aromatic ketol and is also known as 2-hydroxy-1,2-diphenylethanone. It is produced by adding sodium cyanide to an ethanol (ethyl alcohol) solution of benzaldehyde and boiling it. This reaction is called benzoin condensation.

Chemical formula: C 6 H 5 CH(OH)COC 6 H 5 , molecular weight: 212.2, melting point: 137.6-138.6°C (racemic), boiling point: 343-344°C. Colorless columnar crystals. Soluble in acetone, ethanol, and benzene, but almost insoluble in water. Used as an analytical reagent to detect zinc. Benzoin, which is used in aromatherapy, is also called benzoin, but this is a different compound.
