Novelist. Born in Gifu Prefecture. In 1916 (Taisho 5), he published a full-length novel, "Junsansha," depicting the love and suffering of youth, which became a bestseller. After the Great Kanto Earthquake, he approached socialism and was active as a member of the NAP movement. After the collapse of the proletarian movement, he returned to his hometown of Takayama and completed his life's work, "Yama no Tami" (People of the Mountain) (1938-40), which depicts a peasant uprising that occurred in Hida during the Meiji Restoration. After World War II, he founded "Jin no Bungaku" (People's Literature) with Fujimori Seikichi and others, and wrote his autobiography, "Ichi Sakka no Ayumi" (The Journey of an Writer) (1957), among other novels. His other full-length novels include "Ancho" (Reef) (1917) and "Kaishu" (Expulsion) (1926).
