1900‐76 Conductor of an Argentine tango orchestra. Born in Buenos Aires, where he died. Originally a violinist, he formed his own orchestra in 1927, and in 1935, when he welcomed pianist Rodolfo Biagi, he revamped his performance style, and since then has become extremely popular. His sharp, refined rhythms were his greatest characteristic, and he was called "El Rey del Compás, the King of Rhythm," but he was also known for his emotional violin, gorgeous piano, and bandoneon variations.
