...Subsequently, it became clear that the production of not only enzymes but also other proteins is under the direct control of genes, and that many proteins are composed of multiple homologous or heterologous polypeptides, so the one-gene-one-enzyme theory was revised and expanded to the one-gene-one-polypeptide theory (Hartman PE Hartman, 1965).

Meanwhile, J. Belling (1928) and others discovered that pachytene chromosomes have a beaded structure consisting of chromosomes and thread-like parts that connect them, and CB Bridges and others (1935) discovered that salivary gland chromosomes consist of highly stainable horizontal stripes and less stainable intervening parts, giving rise to the idea that chromosomes and horizontal stripes correspond to genes. Based on the results of research into the recombination of pseudoalleles and the mechanism of gene mutation, this idea was developed into the "Unified Concept of the Gene" by MM Green and others (1955), who proposed that genes are basic units common to the three phenomena of function (i.e. controlling traits), recombination, and mutation.
