1873‐1957 German-born ethnologist. Also known as Van Gennep. He received his higher education in France and served as a professor at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland and a translator for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but he also conducted research and wrote about ethnography and folklore, mainly in French. He wrote many books about the religions of primitive societies, such as totemism, myths, and legends, and about folklore from various regions of France, but the one that has had the greatest influence on subsequent anthropological research and is highly regarded is Les rites de passage (1909).
