Moss Phlox - Moss Phlox

Japanese: シバザクラ - しばざくら
Moss Phlox - Moss Phlox

A perennial plant of the family Polemoniaceae (APG classification: Polemoniaceae). Native to the eastern United States, its English name is Moss Phlox. The stems are low, 5-10 cm long, spreading along the ground, and densely branching. They are initially covered with soft hairs, but become woody at the base. The leaves are evergreen and tough, lanceolate or needle-like, about 1 cm long. From March to May, pink-pink, five-petaled flowers about 2 cm across bloom in the axils or at the ends of the branches, obscuring the stems and leaves. The petals are obcordates with deep notches. The sepals are needle-shaped. There are many horticultural varieties, including the white-flowered Liter Dot, the deep pink-flowered Lilac Quinn, and the white-flowered Euonymus moniliforme. They are planted and enjoyed in flower beds, stone walls, rockeries, and green belts. They are propagated by division and cuttings. For cuttings, take a cutting of about 15cm in October and bury one-third of the base in the soil. It is highly cold-resistant.
