A form of pilgrimage to Ise in the early modern period. It was first seen in the entry for March 14, 1650 (Keian 3) in the Kan'yōki. In the early modern period, pilgrimages to Ise without the permission of village officials were called nukimairi, but gradually the term came to refer to pilgrimages by servants or children without the permission of their masters or parents. In addition to the pilgrimages in 1650 (Keian 3), the Okame pilgrimages of 1705 (Hoei 2) and 1771 (Meiwa 8) were also sometimes called nukimairi. From the mid-early modern period onwards, it became popular to believe that masters who prevented pilgrimages were being punished by the gods, and so it gradually came to be tolerated.
