...However, in southern France, west of Provence, and further south from Spain to the Italian peninsula, houses with gently sloping round tiled roofs and rafter trusswork are the norm, and their floor plans are becoming increasingly irregular. These regions have long had circular or oval-shaped dwellings, and this tradition is continued in the stone-walled houses of southern Italy with their conical stone roofs (trullos), and in the houses of Sardinia.

As one crosses the Adriatic into the Balkans, hipped roofs become more common and gabled stone houses become increasingly rare.
