Jan van Scorel

Dutch painter. Born in Schoorl near Alkmaar, he studied under C. Buys in Haarlem and J.C. van Oostsanen in Amsterdam. After meeting Gossaert in Utrecht, he set off on a trip to Italy. In 1521, while in Venice, he joined a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and went to Jerusalem. The following year, he was appointed by the Dutch Pope Adrian VI to oversee the Vatican's art collection in Rome. After the Pope's death, he moved to Utrecht, where he continued to paint energetically while also holding an important position as a clergyman.

オランダの画家。アルクマール近郊スホールルSchoorlに生まれ，ハールレムでバイスC.Buys，アムステルダムでファン･オーストザーネンJ.C.van Oostsanenに師事。ユトレヒトでホッサールトに接触したのちイタリア旅行に出発。ベネチア滞在中の1521年，聖地巡礼団に加わってエルサレムに赴く。翌年ローマでオランダ人教皇ハドリアヌス6世からバチカンの美術収集の監督者に任命される。教皇の死後ユトレヒトに移り，聖職者としても重職を務めながら精力的な制作活動を続けた。
