1495‐1562 Dutch painter. Born in Schoorl near Alkmaar, he studied under C. Buys in Haarlem and J.C. van Oostsanen in Amsterdam. After meeting Gossaert in Utrecht, he set off on a trip to Italy. In 1521, while in Venice, he joined a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and went to Jerusalem. The following year, he was appointed by the Dutch Pope Adrian VI to oversee the Vatican's art collection in Rome. After the Pope's death, he moved to Utrecht, where he continued to paint energetically while also holding an important position as a clergyman.
