Phan Thanh Gian

1796‐1867
A 19th century Vietnamese politician and diplomat. Born in Kien Hoa Province in southern Vietnam. After passing the imperial examination in 1826, he worked in various government posts, and in 1851, he was appointed deputy chief envoy for Nam Chi (the name for southern Vietnam) to administer the southern region together with chief envoy Nguyen Chi Phong. When the French army invaded the southern region in 1858, he signed the Treaty of Saigon with French commander Bonnard together with deputy chief envoy Lam Duy Hiep in 1862, ceding the three eastern provinces of the south and establishing French Cochinchina.

19世紀ベトナムの政治家。外交官。ベトナム南部のキエンホア省生れ。1826年科挙の会試に及第後，官途を転々としたのち，51年に南圻(ベトナム南部をさす地方名)経略副使として正使グエン･チ･フォン(阮知方)とともに南部の行政にあたった。58年以降のフランス軍の南部侵略に際しては，62年議和正使全権大臣として副使のラム･ズイ･ヒエプ(林維浹)とともにフランス軍司令官ボナールとサイゴン条約を締結し，南部の東3省を割譲，フランス領コーチシナを成立させた。
