French chanson singer, lyricist, and composer. Born in Paris as the son of an Armenian entertainer, he began performing on stage with his parents from an early age. In 1942, he formed a duet with a friend, and eventually began writing songs, and in 1953 began his career as a solo singer. His unique singing style, with its husky voice and strong vibrato, attracted young people, and by the late 1950s he had become the most popular singer in the chanson world. In the 1960s he wrote excellent songs such as "La Mama" and "La Bohème," and although he seemed to be in a bit of a slump in the 1970s, in the 1980s he showed a positive and ambitious style amid his mature taste, and he remains at the top of the chanson world.

フランスのシャンソンの歌手で作詞･作曲家。アルメニア人の芸人の息子としてパリで生まれ，幼時から両親と舞台に立つ。1942年，友人と二重唱を組み，やがて歌を書くようになり，53年にソロ歌手の道を歩き始める。しゃがれ声に強いビブラートのついた特異な歌いぶりが若者の人気を集め，50年代後半にはシャンソン界で一番の人気歌手となった。60年代には《ラ･ママ》《ラ･ボエーム》などのすぐれた歌を書き，70年代はやや沈滞を感じさせたが，80年代に入ると円熟した味の中にも前向きの意欲をうかがわせ，依然としてシャンソン界のトップに立っている。
