Gillis van Coninxloo

1544‐1607
Flemish landscape painter. Born into a family of painters that dates back to the end of the 15th century. Registered as a free master in Antwerp in 1570. In 1585, he fled to Zeeland in the Netherlands for religious reasons, and from 1587 to 1595 was active in Frankenthal, Germany, where Flemish exiled painters gathered, before settling in Amsterdam in 1595. He combined the Flemish tradition of panoramic landscape depiction that had been around since Patinir with the ideal landscapes of the 16th century Venetian school, establishing a unique style of forest close-up landscapes that he introduced to the Netherlands.

フランドルの風景画家。15世紀末にさかのぼる画家一族の出身。1570年アントウェルペン(アントワープ)で自由親方に登録される。85年信仰上の理由からオランダのゼーラントへ亡命，87‐95年フランドルの亡命画家の集まるドイツのフランケンタールで活躍し，95年からアムステルダムに定住。彼は，パティニール以来のフランドルのパノラマ的な風景描写の伝統と16世紀ベネチア派風の理想風景とを合成して，独特の森の近景風景様式を樹立し，それをオランダに導入した。
