Nangai [village] - Nangai

Japanese: 南外[村] - なんがい
Nangai [village] - Nangai
A village in Senboku District, central Akita Prefecture. Population 4,990 (1995). Surrounded by the Dewa Mountains to the east, west, and south, and facing the Omono River to the north. It occupies the Naraoka River basin, a tributary of the Omono River, and most of the town area is forested. The main settlement is Ochiai, where the Naraoka River and Nishinomata River meet, and in the early modern period, boat traffic on the Omono River sailed up to this point, making it a distribution center for goods. Nishi-Itado, located at the confluence of the Naraoka River and Omono River, was a ferry terminal to Kita-Naraoka (now Kamioka Town) on the opposite bank, and played an important role in boat traffic on the Omono River. Rice is the main crop, but livestock farming, tobacco, apples, shiitake mushrooms, and other crops are also thriving in the town.
