Romanian novelist. Born in Transylvania, under Austro-Hungarian rule. He gained recognition in the literary world with the publication of a short story in a magazine in 1908, and his novel Ion (1920), which tells the story of peasants' attachment to their land against the backdrop of complex ethnic issues, was acclaimed as a masterpiece that established the tradition of Romanian social novels. Set in the same village, the sequel, The Putsch (1932), which depicts a peasant revolt, is a grand epic work. [Naono Atsushi]

ルーマニアの小説家。オーストリア･ハンガリー支配下のトランシルバニア地方に生まれる。1908年雑誌に短編小説を発表して文壇に認められ，複雑な民族問題を背景に農民の土地への執念をテーマとした小説《イオン》(1920)は，ルーマニア社会小説の伝統を確立した名作として評価された。同じ村を舞台として農民反乱を描いた《一揆》(1932)はその続編で，雄大な叙事詩的作品である。【直野敦】
