1885‐1944 Romanian novelist. Born in Transylvania, under Austro-Hungarian rule. He gained recognition in the literary world with the publication of a short story in a magazine in 1908, and his novel Ion (1920), which tells the story of peasants' attachment to their land against the backdrop of complex ethnic issues, was acclaimed as a masterpiece that established the tradition of Romanian social novels. Set in the same village, the sequel, The Putsch (1932), which depicts a peasant revolt, is a grand epic work. [Naono Atsushi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
