An evergreen dwarf shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows on rocks beside snowy valleys in high mountains (illustration). It is a unique plant with only one species in one genus. The stems branch out well, crawl along the ground, and form a mat. The leaves are linear, 3-4 mm long and 1 mm wide, with parallel pleated wings on the underside and appear tubular in cross section. In July and August, flower stalks grow from the ends of the branches and produce 2-10 pale pink flowers at the top. The flowers are tetrameric, with sepals in four lobes and a plate-shaped corolla that spreads out and has four lobes to the base, 5-6 mm in diameter. There are eight stamens.

高山の雪渓のわきの岩上などに生えるツツジ科の常緑矮小（わいしよう）低木（イラスト）。1属1種の特殊な植物である。茎はよく分枝して地をはい，マット状となる。葉は線形で長さ3～4mm，幅1mm，裏面には縁に平行なひだ状の翼があり，横断面は筒状に見える。7～8月，枝先に花茎を伸ばし，上部に2～10個の淡紅色の花をつける。花は4数性で萼片は4裂，花冠は皿状に広がり基部まで4裂し，径5～6mm。おしべは8本。
