This is a moving magic lantern, and was invented around the Kyowa period (1801-04) when Utsushietoraku (Fujikawa Toraku) was inspired by the "Dutch Ekiman mirror" he saw in Ueno. He drilled a hole in a small box like a bathtub and used glass beads to project a picture onto it. In the Meiji period, Ryofunetei Sen'yu, Yuki Magosaburo, Tamagawa Bunraku and others performed this, but it gradually disappeared. ...
