In Japan, dragons often appear as images of the same thing as snakes, and are often said to represent water, water gods, or jealous women.
[Western]
In the West, dragons are called "dragons," which comes from the Greek word "drakōn," meaning snake. Moreover, this Greek word is thought to be closely related to the word "derkesthai," meaning "to stare," and is therefore thought to be related to the general staring behavior of snakes.
