Fine ceramics

Japanese: ファインセラミックス（英語表記）fine ceramics

Also called new ceramics. Highly functional ceramics made from high-purity natural or synthetic inorganic compounds through precise control of the manufacturing process. Conventional ceramics have many defects and impurities, and are hard but brittle due to the manufacturing constraints of sintering. Fine ceramics have excellent properties such as heat resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and electrical insulation, by improving the purity and precision of the material and controlling defects and grain boundary structure. As a result, they are used as high-temperature structural materials (steatite porcelain, spinel firebricks, silicon nitride, silicon carbide, etc.), which were previously unthinkable, as well as various sensor materials, IC substrates, and capacitors (stable zirconia, barium titanate). They have grown rapidly in many fields, including electronics and bionics, and have been called the Neolithic Age and the New Materials Revolution.

ニューセラミックスともいう。高純度の天然無機物または合成した無機化合物を原料に，製造過程の精微な制御により作られる，高い機能をもつセラミックス。従来のセラミックスは焼結して作るという製造上の制約から，欠陥や不純物が多く，硬いが脆いという欠点があった。ファインセラミックスは，材料の純度と精度を高め，欠陥制御，粒界構造制御などを行うことで，耐熱，耐摩耗，耐食性や電気絶縁性などのすぐれた性質をもつものである。これにより，従来では考えられなかった高温構造材料 (ステアタイト磁器，スピネル質耐火煉瓦，窒化ケイ素，炭化ケイ素など) として，また各種センサ材料，IC基板，コンデンサ (安定ジルコニア，チタン酸バリウム) などに用いられている。エレクトロニクスやバイオニクスなど多くの分野で急成長し，新石器時代，新材料革命と呼ばれるにいたった。
