When the melting point of an alloy is T _m (K), the stable phase shown in the equilibrium diagram does not easily form even if the alloy is aged at a temperature below T _m /2. When the alloy is aged at a low temperature after solution treatment and quenching, a metastable phase called the GP zone (short for Guinier-Preston zone) first forms, and then an intermediate phase is formed. The crystal structure of the GP zone is the same as that of the parent phase, and since it appears to be a type of solute segregation, some people consider the hardening due to the formation of the GP zone to be excluded from precipitation hardening. …
