A frog of the family Hylidae in the order Anura in the class Amphibians. It is found from around the Yangtze River in China to the Korean Peninsula. It is about 4 centimeters long. Its back is olive-colored with irregular dark spots scattered throughout. Its underside is yellow with a purplish tinge. It has a stocky body and small eyes. Its hind legs are short, but the inner ridges of the soles of its feet are highly developed, which it uses to burrow underground. It lays eggs in temporary puddles on nights of heavy rain in the summer. The eggs float separately on the water surface. Males have a loud croak. Embryos develop quickly, and metamorphosis takes about half a month. This genus (the Oriental frog) is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, with this species marking the northern limit.
