file system
A method of managing and storing data on auxiliary storage devices such as hard disks for efficient and easy use. Data groups are treated as files, and files are positioned within folders (directories) with a hierarchical structure. Management methods vary depending on the operating system; Microsoft Windows systems use FAT, Apple Mac OS systems use HFS, etc.

ハードディスクなどの補助記憶装置を効率良く、かつ容易に利用できるよう管理し、データを格納する方式。データのまとまりをファイルとして扱い、階層構造を持つフォルダー(ディレクトリー)の中でファイルを位置付ける。オペレーティングシステムにより管理方式は異なり、マイクロソフトのWindows系ではFAT、アップルのMac OS系ではHFSなどが使われる。
