...Observations to determine the relative number of sunspots are simple observations that can be done with a small telescope, but given the recent thinking that sunspot activity is just one type of solar activity, it can be said to be a very important indicator of the functioning of the sun, which can be obtained most easily.

R. Callington (1826-75) discovered that the mean latitude at which sunspots appear moves from high latitudes toward the equator along with the sunspot cycle, but G. Spörer (1822-95) subsequently investigated this phenomenon in detail, and so this phenomenon is named after him as Spörer's Law. The mean latitude at which sunspots appear starts at ±30°, passes through a period when the number of sunspots is greatest around ±10°, and then reaches a minimum in the number of sunspots around ±5°, and at the same time a new sunspot cycle begins around ±30°.
