According to the Icelandic sagas, Greenlandic colonists Leif the Red's son and his companions discovered a series of lands to the west of Greenland. Geographical descriptions suggest that these lands are the eastern coast of the North American continent. On the southernmost island, grapes grow wild and salmon live in the rivers, and attempts were made to colonize the area, but failed. The island was called Vínland, with "bean" referring to grapes. For the Norsemen seeking new lands, the coexistence of grapes, a symbol of the south, and salmon, a delicacy of their homeland, was a utopia.
