Invercargill
A port city at the southern tip of New Zealand's South Island. It faces Stewart Island across the Foveaux Strait. Brewing, foundry and timber industries are carried out here, and it is an export port for wheat, wool, dairy products and meat. There is also an aluminium smelter (completed in 1971) which was funded by a Japanese company. Population: 46,773 (2006).
