Cabaret Voltaire

A British group that became the origin of industrial music. Taking their name from the birthplace of Zurich Dadaism, the group was formed in 1974 in the industrial city of Sheffield, England. The three members, Richard H. Kirk (1956-2021, guitar, synthesizer), Stephen Mallinder (1955-, bass, vocals), and Chris Watson (1952-, electronics), applied Dadaist techniques of assemblage and collage to sound manipulation, based on inorganic beats produced by rhythm machines. Their early sound, which can be heard on their first album Mix-Up (1979) and second album The Voice of America (1980), was an experimental style that combined various noises and tape collage in a metallic way, and along with Throbbing Gristle, would later be called industrial music.

In 1981, Watson left the band, and the band's direction changed to more pop dance music. Their minimalist techno sound in the 1980s had a major influence on European club music later on. In 1992, they established their own label, Plastex. Members were also active in solo activities, and Kirk was active under the alias Sweet Exorcist.

インダストリアル・ミュージックの源流となったイギリスのグループ。チューリヒ・ダダイズムの発祥地からグループ名を拝借し、1974年、イギリスの工業都市シェフィールドで結成された。メンバーであるリチャード・H・カークRichard H. Kirk（1956―2021、ギター、シンセサイザー）、ステファン・マリンダーStephen Mallinder（1955―　、ベース、ボーカル）、クリス・ワトソンChris Watson（1952―　、エレクトロニクス）の3人は、リズム・マシンによる無機質なビートを土台に、ダダイズムの技法であるアッサンブラージュ（寄せ集め）やコラージュ（組合せ）を音響操作に応用した。ファースト・アルバム『ミックス・アップ』Mix-Up（1979）やセカンド・アルバム『ザ・ボイス・オブ・アメリカ』The Voice of America（1980）で聞くことのできる彼らの初期のサウンドは、実験的なスタイルによりさまざまなノイズやテープ・コラージュがメタリックに結合された音楽で、スロッビング・グリッスルと並んで後にインダストリアル・ミュージックとよばれるようになる。

　1981年にワトソンが脱退し、よりポップなダンス・ミュージックへと路線が変化していく。1980年代の彼らのミニマルなテクノ・サウンドは、後のヨーロッパのクラブ・ミュージックにも大きな影響を与えた。1992年に独自のレーベル「Plastex」を設立。メンバーのソロ活動も盛んで、カークはスウィート・エクソシストSweet Exorcistの別名でも活動していた。
