A high-rise apartment building in ancient Rome. Meaning "island" in Latin, it was so named because the apartments were arranged on all four sides of a courtyard, taking up an entire city block. The first floor was generally used as a shop called a taberna or a craftsman's workshop, and the second floor and above were rented out. Remains of such buildings can be found in Ostia, a port city outside Rome, and the House of Diana, built in the mid-2nd century BC, was five stories high. It is said that some buildings in Rome were over 30 meters tall. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
