Kabuki dance. Nagauta. First performed at the Meijiza Theater in February 1929. Lyrics by Kimura Tomiko. Music by Kineya Sakichi IV. One of the "Ten Kinds of Monkeys" created by Ichikawa Ennosuke II (Monkey), who was a specialist in this. On a summer night, a cool, lonely Edokko is plagued by fleas and rushes out of his mosquito net to chase them away. As he cools off in the heat of sleep, a cat appears and starts playing with him, leading to a stylish dance of the man and the cat groaning. Comical gestures and other such acts were the exclusive domain of Ennosuke III. [Nishigata Setsuko] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
