The great plain in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent. It was formed by the accumulation of thick alluvial deposits in the depression between the Himalayas in the north and the stable landmass of the Indian peninsula in the south. The word Hindustan means "Indian region" in Persian, and in the broad sense, the Hindustan Plain refers to the plains of the Indus and Ganges rivers, but in the narrow sense, it refers only to the latter. After the partition of India and Pakistan, the plains of India, including the plains of the Brahmaputra River, are called the Great Indian Plain.
