Iwashide - Sardine

A deciduous shrub of the Betulaceae family (APG classification: Betulaceae), it reaches a height of 3 meters and branches densely. The leaves are alternate, thick, ovate, small, about 3 cm long, with 10 to 13 pairs of lateral veins that are slightly raised on the surface. The edges have fine double serrations. The young branches and petioles are hairy. The stipules and bud scales remain on the branches even after the leaves have opened. It is monoecious and blooms in spring when the buds open. The fruit spikes are about 2 cm long, short and do not droop, and have 4 to 8 bracts scattered sparsely. It is distributed in the Chugoku region of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and grows on rocky, dry cliffs. It is also distributed in the Korean Peninsula and China.

カバノキ科（APG分類：カバノキ科）の落葉低木で、高さ3メートルに達し、密に枝分れする。葉は互生し、厚く、卵形、小形で長さは約3センチメートル前後、側脈は10～13対で表面にすこし隆起する。縁(へり)には細かい重鋸歯(じゅうきょし)がある。若枝や葉柄には毛がある。托葉(たくよう)や芽鱗(がりん)は、葉が開いてからも枝上に残る。雌雄同株で、春に芽が開くと同時に開花する。果穂は長さ約2センチメートル、短いので垂れ下がらず、4～8枚の包葉をまばらにつける。本州の中国地方、四国、九州に分布し、岩の多い乾いた崖(がけ)などに生える。朝鮮半島と中国にも分布する。
