A deciduous shrub of the Betulaceae family (APG classification: Betulaceae), it reaches a height of 3 meters and branches densely. The leaves are alternate, thick, ovate, small, about 3 cm long, with 10 to 13 pairs of lateral veins that are slightly raised on the surface. The edges have fine double serrations. The young branches and petioles are hairy. The stipules and bud scales remain on the branches even after the leaves have opened. It is monoecious and blooms in spring when the buds open. The fruit spikes are about 2 cm long, short and do not droop, and have 4 to 8 bracts scattered sparsely. It is distributed in the Chugoku region of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and grows on rocky, dry cliffs. It is also distributed in the Korean Peninsula and China.
