Izaemon

Japanese: 伊左衛門 - いざえもん

...A type of puppet theater and kabuki. The love story of Yugiri and Izaemon is intertwined with the Awa family feud and the legend of Awa Jyurobei. There are many plays that dramatize the love story between Yugiri, a prostitute from Ogiya in Shinmachi, Osaka, who died at the age of 27 on January 6, 1678 (Enpo 6), and her frequent customer, Fujiya Izaemon.

...There is a theory that it was written in 1780 (An'ei 9), but doubts remain. It may have premiered in May 1793 (Kansei 5) at the Onishi Theater in Osaka under the title "Yugiri Izaemon Kuruwa Bunsho." It is a rewrite of the Yoshidaya section of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "Yugiri Awa no Naruto" (estimated to have premiered in 1712), which tells the love story of the courtesans Ogiya Yugiri and Fujiya Izaemon from Shinmachi, Osaka....
