An Indian political party founded in 1913. It developed from the Punjab Hindu Khabar Party, which opposed the formation of the Muslim League (1906), and is a religious sectarian party that seeks to unify India based on Hinduism. Initially, its members included influential Congress leaders such as Lajpat Rai and MM Malaviya, and the organization grew alongside the Congress. However, from the late 1920s onwards, its religious sectarian character became stronger, and during the reign of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966), who served as president from 1937 to 1948, it took on a different stance from the Congress, supporting the British war effort and expanding its influence during the imprisonment of the Congress leaders during the Quit India movement in 1942.
