Born: 1437. Lisbon
[died] 1508. Venetian Jewish politician, philosopher, theologian, and commentator. Born into an ancient family that claimed descent from King David, he received a wide-ranging education in Jewish philosophy, Christian theology, and classical literature. Like many Spanish Jews, he combined scholarly tastes with political ability. He was the first Jewish scholar to be influenced by Renaissance humanism. He was one of the first to recognize the need to reconstruct the social environment in which the Bible was written in order to interpret it. He also applied a practical knowledge of statecraft to his commentary on the Books of Samuel and Kings.
