Quentin (Quinten) Massys (Matsys, Metsys)

Flemish painter. Also called Matsys, Matzeis, or Metzes. Born in Leuven and died in Ambers. A painter in the transitional period between late Gothic and Italian Renaissance, he was ahead of Rubens in that he led the fusion of Northern and Southern European styles. His early works have been lost, so his lineage as a painter is unclear, but he is known to have many kinships with the paintings of the painter Bouts, who was active in his hometown. He settled in Ambers from 1491 onwards, and formed friendships with humanists such as Erasmus and More. He also travelled to Italy, where he achieved a new three-dimensional effect through clear colours and composition. From 1515 to 1524, he collaborated with Patinir (The Temptation of Saint Anthony, Madrid, private collection). His representative works include the altarpiece for Ambers Cathedral, The Entombment of Christ (Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Ambers), The Virgin and Child (Gemeinschaft der Besarbeitung, Berlin), and The Money Changer and His Wife (Louvre).

フランドルの画家。マサイス、マツェイス、メツェイスともいう。ルーフェンで生まれ、アンベルスで没した。後期ゴシックとイタリア・ルネサンスの過渡期に位置する画家で、北欧と南欧の様式を融合に導いた点でルーベンスを先取りする立場にある。初期の作品が失われているので画家としての系譜には不明な点が多いが、故郷で活躍した画家ボウツの絵とは多くの親近関係が認められる。1491年以降アンベルスに定住し、エラスムスやモアらの人文主義者と親交を結ぶ。またイタリアに旅行して、明快な色彩とコンポジションによる新しい立体感を獲得した。1515～24年にはパティニールと共作を行った（『聖アントニウスの誘惑』マドリード、個人蔵）。代表作にはアンベルス大聖堂のための祭壇画『キリスト埋葬』（アンベルス王立美術館）、『聖母子像』（ベルリン絵画館）、『両替商とその妻』（ルーブル美術館）がある。
