A representative novelist of Norwegian neo-romantic literature. He started out as a naturalist, but after a stay in Paris in 1894, he switched to a style rich in fantasy and symbolism, publishing the collection of short stories The Bat's Wing (1895). Works such as When Love Disappears (1903) and The Spirit of Life (1906) are excellent in their expression of eroticism. His long novel Hermann Ek (1896-98) deals with the clash between peasant and urban culture. His literary masterpiece is the trilogy The Avalanche (1918-19). His plays include Towards the Carnival (1915), which depicts a Machiavelli tragedy.

ノルウェー新ロマン主義文学の代表的小説家。自然主義で出発したが，1894年のパリ滞在後，幻想と象徴の豊かな作風に転じて短編集《コウモリの羽》(1895)を出した。《愛の失せる時》(1903)，《いのちの精》(1906)などはエロティシズム表現にすぐれる。長編《ヘルマン･エク》(1896‐98)は農民文化と都会文化の衝突が主題。文学的集大成は三部作《雪崩》(1918‐19)である。戯曲もマキアベリの悲劇を描く《カーニバルに向かって》(1915)などがある。
