1865‐1926 A representative novelist of Norwegian neo-romantic literature. He started out as a naturalist, but after a stay in Paris in 1894, he switched to a style rich in fantasy and symbolism, publishing the collection of short stories The Bat's Wing (1895). Works such as When Love Disappears (1903) and The Spirit of Life (1906) are excellent in their expression of eroticism. His long novel Hermann Ek (1896-98) deals with the clash between peasant and urban culture. His literary masterpiece is the trilogy The Avalanche (1918-19). His plays include Towards the Carnival (1915), which depicts a Machiavelli tragedy. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
