Chemical formula: HIO. It exists only as an aqueous solution, and is present in trace amounts in aqueous solutions of iodine _I2 . _I2 + _H2O⇄HIO + H ⁺ + ^I- It is an extremely weak acid, with an ionization constant K _a = [H ⁺ ][IO ^- ]/[HIO] = 2.3 x ^10-11 (25°C). It is amphoteric and is also expressed as IOH, and the following dissociation also occurs: IOH⇄I ⁺ + ^OH- , K _b = [I ⁺ ][OH ^- ]/[IOH] = 3.3 x ^10-10 HIO + H ⁺ ⇄I ⁺ + _H2O It is obtained by mixing an aqueous solution of iodine with silver oxide or mercury(II) oxide, and filtering off the insoluble silver or mercury salts.
