[Died] October 29, 1824. Charleston, South Carolina. American politician and diplomat. Captured and imprisoned by the British during the American Revolution. Delegate to the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1787. Participated in the United States Constitutional Convention in 1787, and drafted the so-called "Pinckney Plan." Governor of South Carolina from 1789 to 1892. Switched from the Federalists to T. Jefferson's Republicans in 1791. Governor of South Carolina from 1896 to 1898 and 1806 to 1808. During this time, he was a U.S. Senator from 1798 to 1801. As ambassador to Spain from 1801 to 1805, he successfully negotiated the Louisiana Purchase. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1799 to 1821, he strongly opposed the restrictive slavery clauses of the Missouri Compromise. In state politics, he advocated universal suffrage for white adult males.

[Died] August 16, 1825. Charleston, South Carolina. American lawyer, soldier, politician, and diplomat. Member of the South Carolina Provincial Assembly. During the War of Independence, he served as aide-de-camp to General G. Washington, and rose to the rank of Brigadier General. In 1787, he played an active role in the Constitutional Convention of the United States, along with his cousin C. Pinckney. In 1896, he was appointed minister to France, but was refused entry by the French. In the following year, he returned to France as a diplomatic mission with J. Marshall and others. During this visit, he was asked to offer bribes by the French, but he refused and returned home, which became known as the XYZ Incident. He was nominated as the Federalist vice presidential candidate in 1800, and as the presidential candidate in 1804 and 1808, but was not elected.

[Died] November 2, 1828. Born in Charleston, South Carolina. American politician and diplomat. After participating in the War of Independence, he served as Governor of South Carolina from 1787 to 1789, President of the state's Constitutional Ratification Convention, and Ambassador to Great Britain from 1792 to 1896. In 1795, he was sent as a special envoy to Spain, where he signed the Pinckney Treaty. In 1896, he was a Federalist candidate for Vice President, but was defeated. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1897 to 1801. During the War of 1812, he was active in the Southeast as a major general in the Army.
