Rishikesh

Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, is a village a few kilometers into Nepal from the border town of Naugarh, and Kushinagar, the place where Buddha passed away, is on the outskirts of Gorakhpur. Varanasi (Benares), a holy city since the ancient Hindu dynasty, is located in the eastern part of the state, and Rishikesh, a holy place revered as one of the palaces of Hindu gods, is located in the Himalayan mountains on the upper reaches of the Ganga River at the northwestern edge of the state. Meerut, the site of the outbreak of the Sepoy Mutiny (the First War of Independence against the British, 1857-58), which determined British colonization, is on the western edge of the state, and Lucknow, the site of the surrender of the Indian army, is in the central part of the state.
