Lev Yakovlevich Shternberg

1861‐1927
Soviet ethnologist. Also known as Shternberg. Born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. Studied at St. Petersburg University and Novorossiyskiy University in Odessa. Joined the Narodnik movement and was exiled to Sakhalin (1889-97), where he studied the language, kinship, beliefs, and customs of the Nivkh (Gilyak) people. From 1901 he worked at the St. Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, and from 1918 he became a professor at the University of Petrograd (now St. Petersburg), where he produced many works based on evolutionism.

ソ連邦の民族学者。シュテルンベルグとも呼ぶ。ウクライナのジトミル生れ。ペテルブルグ大学とオデッサのノボロシースキー大学に学ぶ。ナロードニキの運動に加わってサハリン(樺太)へ流刑となり(1889‐97)，同地でニブヒ(ギリヤーク)族の言語，親族組織，信仰，習俗を研究。1901年以降ペテルブルグ人類学･民族学博物館に勤め，18年以降はペトログラード(現，サンクト･ペテルブルグ)大学教授として，進化主義の立場に立つ多くの業績を残した。
