1861‐1927 Soviet ethnologist. Also known as Shternberg. Born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. Studied at St. Petersburg University and Novorossiyskiy University in Odessa. Joined the Narodnik movement and was exiled to Sakhalin (1889-97), where he studied the language, kinship, beliefs, and customs of the Nivkh (Gilyak) people. From 1901 he worked at the St. Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, and from 1918 he became a professor at the University of Petrograd (now St. Petersburg), where he produced many works based on evolutionism.
