A type of capacitor (electrical storage device) used in electrical circuits. Also known as MP (short for metallized paper) capacitors, these are made by applying a thin layer of lacquer to 8-15 micrometer thick capacitor paper, then vacuum-depositing metals such as nickel, aluminum, and zinc, then rolling up two sheets of the paper and impregnating them with an impregnating agent. The capacitance is 0.1 microfarads to 100 microfarads. Because the electrodes are vapor-deposited films, the volume is less than one-third that of conventional paper capacitors. Even if the metallized paper experiences insulation breakdown for some reason, when a hole is made in the metallized paper by the heat from a short circuit current, the nearby vapor-deposited electrodes also dissipate, and the insulation is instantly restored, providing a self-healing effect.
