Pyrrole

Japanese:
Pyrrole

C 4 H 5 N (67.09). Also called azole. Found in small amounts in coal tar and in large amounts in bone oil. It is produced by heating ammonium 2-furancarboxylate, by heating furan and ammonia over Al 2 O 3 , or by distilling succinimide with zinc dust. A colorless liquid with a characteristic chloroform-like odor. Boiling point 130-131 °C. 0.9691. 1.5085. λ max 209, 240 nm (ε 6730, 300). Easily soluble in organic solvents, slightly soluble in water. Colored in air. The basicity of its NH group is very weak (p K b 13.6), but it is highly reactive and polymerizes easily in acidic conditions to form a resin. Metal compounds are used in the synthesis of pyrrole derivatives. For example, the pyrrole ring is aromatic, and halogen substitution of the hydrogen in the ring, coupling with diazonium salts, and acylation with acid anhydrides proceed easily. The name pyrrole comes from the Greek word for "fire-red," and pyrrole and its derivatives produce pyrrole red in dilute hydrochloric acid solutions. They also produce the deep blue color pyrrole blue in oxidation reactions with selenite and in reactions with a mixed solution of silicic acid, ammonium molybdate, and sulfuric acid, so they are also used to detect these. C4H5N(67.09).
